Mini Gibson Les Paul ‘59 Les Paul USB Drive Giveaway

Gibson Mini Les Paul USB Flash Drive

First off - Damn, Cary at EGR is fast. He has already posted an article about Gibson’s Les Paul ‘59 USB Drive giveaway.

Second - How is it possible that I didn’t know that Gibson had a mini Les Paul that was a flash drive and came with it’s own little case? I’m the biggest geek I know. Well - maybe not, but I AM the biggest gadget whore I know. I’m just checking out the Gibson website and they have a few geeky products I didn’t know about. For example CD-Rs and DVD-Rs that come in a fancy tin case and 500GB external hard drives that glow blue Gibson logos.

Anyway, Gibson is giving one of these flash drives away this month. I would enter the contest to win one, but once again it’s only open to yanks. So all you Americans, can visit the Gibson website to try and win yourself one of these bad boys.

The drive is a 1GB flash. It’s a ‘59 Les Paul replica (Sorry no Relic versions available). It’s USB 2.0, comes with the cable and a tiny guitar case. As of now I cant seem to find anywhere online to buy one, but I’ll be keeping my eyes out.

Good Luck!

Votigo Guitar Solo Competition - Win a Gibson Epiphone G-400 SG

Tuesday, May 15th, 2007

Slash and like 50 freakin Gibsons
Gibson is holding a guitar solo competition on the beta website Votigo this month that will be running until June 17th. To get a chance to win the Epiphone G-400 SG guitar you will have to record a video of yourself playing any kind of solo and upload it to the Votigo website. Then on June 17th, the video with the most amount of votes will win.

It looks to me like the contest is actually being held by Votigo to promote their website. This is only open to entries from within the 50 United States and the District of Columbia. Apparently one of the rules is to tell your friends to vote… Yeah, it’s a good idea, obviously. There is no limit to how many solos you can submit, but don’t bother submitting the same entry more than once… it just doesn’t make sense. Oh, and you have to be at least 13 years old.

I’m not sure how they are planning on confirming authenticity…. I mean I could upload a video of some random who is really good at shredding and win without even picking up a guitar. They do reserve the right to disqualify any entry, so please don’t try that.

The guitar as I said is an Epiphone G-400 SG. The contest states that it is a $500 value, but they are going on Musicians Friend for $299. It’s nothing to scoff at really, it’s a free guitar if you’ve got the chops. My guess though, is if you have the chops then you already have a better guitar and have no use for an entry level SG.

This video below isn’t me, but out of the 10 or so entries so far it is my favorite. Probably cause he shreds like Wylde. May the best solo win!

Gibson Updates Website for Zakk Wylde Custom V

Friday, May 4th, 2007

Gibson’s marketing department always seems to be a few steps behind, but they have finally updated the Gibson Custom website with details about the Zakk Wylde custom Flying V guitar.

There aren’t really any more details beyond what was known before, but they have release a [huge ass] 6MB 2 page PDF that displays it all in one inconveniently large package. Here is the little marketing writeup from the PDF:

THE CUSTOM SHOP DIFFERENCE
It burns in the heart of every player who purchases
a Gibson Custom Shop guitar… and it burns in the
heart of every employee who helps build our
world-class instruments.

We vow to continue infusing every instrument that
passes through our doors with that same passion.
It’s what makes our guitars the best.

From initial wood selection to final assembly, we
sweat the details so that when you pick up your
guitar, your dream, it exceeds every expectation
you could possibly have.

For 2007, we will continue to strive for excellence,
remain faithful to our history, and never lose sight
of our goal to build the fi nest guitars in the world.
Pick one up for yourself. Feel the passion that we
put into our guitars and release yours.

From what I can see they are still only making 100 of these bad boys. This is guaranteed to be a Gibson Vintage in about 50 years.

Zakk Wylde Gibson Custom Bullseye Flying V

Monday, April 23rd, 2007

Zakk Wylde Gibson Custom Flying VGibson’s custom shop has released a Zakk Wylde signature model Flying V featuring a bullseye paint job and EMG pickups. I have not been able to find anything about it on Gibson’s website, or Gibsoncustom.com. I think it should show up under “Inspired by” on Gibson Custom, but I don’t think they update their site very often. Nevertheless, I did find a post on the Zakk Wylde forums about it.

It looks like they are available now. Gibson has done a limited run of 100 of this guitar and they are quoting a MSRP of $7056.00. Someone by the handle BUHZERKER has reported that Midtown Music in GA is letting them go for $4500.00USD.

Like everything else he puts his name behind, Zakk Wylde worked closely on the development of this guitar. Zakk feels that if he can’t pick one up off the shelf and play it at a show, then he won’t back it. Personally, I’m not a huge fan of signature guitars when they have a matched “unique” paint job. However, getting a guitar that has the same physical specs as your idol is fine. When trying to mimic the sound of someone, there is no better way than to use the exact same guitar that they use.

Some people on the forums were complaining about the placement of the pickup switch. Personally I don’t really see what the issue is with that. Having it up by the neck would put it in a bad place for being hit by the pick. The only other option to me would be to have it down in the lower half of the V by the control knobs. Either way, I personally think it is a non-issue.

Gibson HD.6x Digital Guitar In Depth

Sunday, February 4th, 2007

Gibson HD.6x Digital GuitarThe Gibson HD.6x Pro Les Paul has been available for a few months now. Still there is a lot of vague and sometimes inaccurate information on the net about it. In fact, after all I have read I still had a bit of confusion about what exactly this guitar can and can not do. So I decided to do a bit of research.

Just to reiterate what has been talked about on countless websites, this is the first digital guitar from Gibson. Now, digital guitars have been available from a few different manufacturers for years, but I find the term Digital Guitar has been used to describe a wide variety of products. Line 6 for example has had the Variax digital modeling guitar for quite some time. So what exactly is the Gibson 6x.HD Les Paul?

Les Paul Classic Antique - Gibson Guitar of the Week #2

Guitar of the Week #2: Gibson Les Paul Classic Antique
Gibson has released their second Guitar of the Week and man is it stunning. Gibson announced the Les Paul Classic Antique at this years NAMM Gibson has been making it for years. Look at the amazing finish on this guitar. Gibson calls it Fireburst and I think it is just freaking amazing.

Like I said the guitar is a run of the mill Classic Antique complete with ‘57 humbuckers, ’60s slim taper profile, rosewood fingerboard, and antique binding. The Les Paul is no different from others keeping the 3-way pickup toggle switch and volume/tone controls in their standard positions.

Obviously we can’t expect Gibson to be putting out a totally unique Custom each week, but I hope we get to see some more variations from their standard product lineup in the future. Again though, I am all about this finish. I think it’s stunning.

Gibson Guitar of the Week - Week 1

Every Tuesday every week Gibson plans to announce a new limited edition guitar that will only be available for that week. They are calling the program Gibson Guitar of the Week. A maximum of 400 of each model will be made and after that, there will be no more.

The first model to come out is the SG Supreme Bass. Interesting that they choose to do a bass for the first “Guitar of the Week”. I’ll be keeping up with the guitars that come out of this program.

NAMM 2007 Has Come and Gone

Thursday, January 25th, 2007

NAMM Show 2007 SummaryWell, it’s that time of year again and NAMM Show has come and gone…. and I missed again. It’s not like I missed the actual show, because I’m not a NAMM member, but I did miss all the fresh news about products and such.

For those of you not in the loop, NAMM used to stand for “National Association of Music Merchants”. These days they have dropped the full name and just go by the acronym. Basically they are a global organization for the musical equipment industry. Each year they hold a trade show that exhibits all the great new music making products from every company. It is not open to the public, you have to be a NAMM member to attend and to be a NAMM member you have to make, buy, and/or sell musical instruments and products. Right now I am just playing a little catch-up, so lets see what I can find about this years show.

On the official NAMM Show website they have a recap of each day including pictures.

Play Guitar Now has a load of great pictures from each day of the show.

Cary at Electric Guitar Review linked to another NAMM 2007 picture gallery at Modern Guitars Magazine that also has a whole bunch of great shots.

Line 6 unveiled the Floor POD Plus basically combining a POD 2.0 with a huge list of premium effects in a portable stomp box floor set.

Gibson announced 11 new guitar models including the digital HD.6X-Pro. Modern Guitars Magazine has all of the details.

Fender showed off the VG Stratocaster, a modeling guitar. It is equipped with a digital pickup, a modeling dial with 37 different models, and a tuning knob that allows you to select from 5 alternate tunings.

Eddie Van Halen and Fender announced a signature EVH Frankenstein replica. The replicas play like a dream but physically feature every nick and mark the original has.

Man, I could probably go all day reading up on all the great stuff to come out of the show… I guess I still have a lot of reading to do.

Gibson Releases the HD.6x-Pro

Monday, December 4th, 2006

Well… I was going to post a trackback to Cary Miller at Electric Guitar Review and his post from a few weeks ago on the Gibson Digital HD.6x-Pro guitar to announce that it has finally been released. However, as I hit his front page I see that he beat me to the chase. So please head over to his post about the release of the Gibson HD.6x-Pro. He has all the juicy details.

Guitar Gear: Phil Sgrosso from As I Lay Dying Guitar & Amp Setup

Monday, April 3rd, 2006

When recording As I Lay Dying’s 2005 album Shadows are Security, guitarist Phil Sgrosso was introduced to the Krank Revolution Series One head by the album’s mixer Andy Sneap. Since then he wouldn’t dare use anything else for live shows. He is often told how much the live shows sound like the album, which is always great to hear.

As far as live setups go Sgrosso’s is pretty simple and straight to the point. The main focus of his setup is distortion. He has two Krank Revolution Series One 100-watt tube heads (a primary and a backup) hooked into four Mesa/Boogie Recto-Standard straight-front 4×12 cabinets. The cabs house Celestion Vintage 30s. Something that is interesting is that the two upper cabs are not even plugged in. (more…)

Gibson Les Paul Zakk Wylde CAMO Signature Guitar

Tuesday, March 28th, 2006

The Zakk Wylde Signature Les Paul is one of the most popular signature guitars from Gibson. The original features a stunning black on antique white bulleye trademark paint job and a raw oiled maple neck. The Zakk Wylde CAMO is an alteration of that 80’s Les Paul using a black on camouflage for the bullseye.

The body is a 1 piece mahogany back under a carved maple top decorated with gold hardware. For sound it sports the signature EMG ZW (81 neck/85 bridge) active pickups for playing those heavy screaming Black Label Society riffs. I have the ZW set in my Les Paul and I couldn’t imagine another pickup for playing metal. Active is the way to go if you ask me. The sound of the overdrive is unmatched and the sustain is infinite.
