On May 17th, 2007 Pantera and Damageplan guitarist Dimebag Darrell was inducted into Hollywood’s RockWalk. A bronze bust of the legendary metal guitarist was unveiled and installed in the RockWalk. Many performers came out to the event including members of Alice in Chains, Anthrax, Kiss, Rob Zombie, and Slayer.

Zakk Wylde spoke about Dimebag and played the song In This River which he dedicated to Dime on BLS’ most recent album Shot to Hell. There are several videos on YouTube of the ceremony, but most of them are poor quality. You can check them out anyway if you like though.

On the night of the induction the 50 guitars from the Six-String Masterpieces Dimebag Darrel Art Tribute were auctioned off at California’s House of Blues. Many musical figures participated in the original art exhibition over a year ago. The musicians each painted a Dean ML guitar in their own style. Some of the artists who took part include James Hetfield and Kirk Hammett, Joe Satriani, Billy Gibbons, Marilyn Manson, Tom Morello, and Kelly Clarkson. In fact, the guitar decorated by Kelly Clarkson brought in a surprising $3000, beating out both Dave Navarro and Rob Zombie. Earlier in the week I reported that some people were expecting a guitar painted by popular modern artist Mark Ryden would sell for over a million dollars. The guitar only ended up going for $34,000 which is nothing to scoff at, but very short of 1-mil. The money raised was donated to The Little Kids Rock Project who make free musical instruments available to public school students.

Visit Tomorrow’s Productions to see a whole bunch of pictures from the event. Then there are some more pictures over at ZRock.com.

I really love his style, it’s so melodic metal. I realize that he is not an unbelievable guitarist by any means, but I think he is equally good at composition as he is at actually playing. I’m not really going to say much more, I’ll just let the videos speak for themselves. These are both from a dvd released by Norris himself. This first video shows how to play the solo from the song Tranquil.

I think he needs to cinch up that guitar a little higher. He still has a little bit of movement left!

D’Agostino was born and raised in Italy. He picked up the guitar after seeing his cousin perform at church in Torino. He is self taught and cites musicians like Paco de Lucia and Carlos Santana as influences.

Although Chuck Schuldiner is known by many, I really think he is one of the most underrated guitarists of the past 50 years. He is considered by many to the founding father of death metal. Chuck was the founding member of the band Death. In fact, the bad was more or less just a front for Chuck’s musical efforts.

There are several reasons why I love Chuck’s style. First off, he was very good at utilizing alternate timings in a song. You don’t have to listen very closely to hear the timing change at several different points in the above video and it really works.

Just watching Schuldiner’s fingers move is amazing. His style of playing was very strange. He brought his fingers so high off of the fingerboard when shredding, yet his playing is so fluid.

Sadly, Chuck passed away of a brain tumor in 2001 after struggling through treatment for two years. Initially there were reports that he was on his way to recover after surgery, but later it was discovered that the initial diagnosis was incorrect. There was a relapse and when Chuck needed immediate treatment he was denied due to lack of funds. Many artists in the industry held events to raise money for Chuck, but he continued to grow weaker and died of pneumonia on December 13th.

If you are interested in hearing more of his music, visit the Chuck Schuldiner memorial website.

I have had several people ask me “Have you heard Don Ross??” after learning that I love to play guitar. Well aside from others asking me that question, no, I had never heard of him. I finally decided to check him out, and I wish I had earlier. Don Ross is a Canadian guitar player from Montreal. He started to teach himself guitar at 8 years old and at 26 began to seriously pursue a career in music. He has over 10 albums to his name and has won the U.S. National Fingerstyle Guitar Championship twice.

His musical style can not be classified very easily. It is an instrumental kind of new age fingerstyle acoustic rock. He goes from very relaxing tunes to very up-beat technical songs. Here is one of my favorites from the videos available on YouTube.

If you do a quick search though you can find many more. Three songs I have listened to now and I can already see that he is going to become one of my new favorite acoustic artists.

If you like his music, head over to Don Ross’ official website and buy his CD.

First emerging as a 13-year-old guitar prodigy in the 80s, Lagrène was often compared to guitarist Django Reinhardt. At that time the boy had been playing for 9 years already. That’s right… started when he was 4. After a few albums Biréli tried to shake the Reinhardt parallels by changing his style to more of a rock-fusion sound. His current music is more jazz oriented, but still has that strong Reinhardt influence.

I was just surfing a bit and came across this Alexi Laiho interview from January 25th, 2007. It looks like Children of Bodom have just released a new live DVD called Chaos Ridden Years: Stockholm Knockout Live (2006) so Modern Guitars Magazine sat down with Alexi to talk about everything metal.

I have been a huge Children of Bodom fan for about 2 years now. They are one of the many great metal bands that have come out of Eastern Europe over the past few years. Alexi’s call to fame was his amazing playing style and his unique vocals. Although, in the interview he admits he didn’t choose to be singer, he was “stuck with it”. He credits a lot of his technique to virtuoso Steve Vai and living metal legend Zakk Wylde. Personally I love the guy for his ability to play in such harmony with the bands keyboardist Janne Wirman.

Modern Guitars gives a few paragraphs of background on Children of Bodom for those of you who aren’t familiar with the group. After that you can listen to a stream of the song Living Dead Beat off the band’s latest album Are You Dead Yet?. Then the author, Brian D. Holland dives right into the interview.

In the interview I found it interesting to hear what Alexi had to say about Yngwie Malmsteen:

I read somewhere that although you’ve been a huge fan of Yngwie Malmsteen, you’ve since gotten away from him and his style of playing.

Alexi: Yeah, well, Yngwie is Yngwie. I mean, what can you say? He’s fuckin’ bad ass, and that’s like stating the obvious. I was more into that neo-classical guitar thing when I was younger. Yeah, I was a huge Yngwie fan. You can hear that influence, especially on the first two albums. At that time, in Europe, there were so many guitar players, you know, Yngwie-copies running around everywhere. They all wanted to be like Yngwie and sound like Yngwie. It kind of pissed me off, you know. I didn’t want to be one of them. So I kind of turned off to that whole style of playing and decided it wasn’t going to be my thing. That’s Yngwie’ thing. He’s one of the greatest ever. End of story.

I just that it was funny… seems like over there Yngwie is like Jimi Hendrix or Zakk Wylde is here, everybody wants to be them.

Anyway, this was a great read for me and I’ll be excited to pick up the new DVD. Check out the whole interview for yourself.

Jimmy Page is seriously the shit. I know there are haters out there, but as far as I’m concerned he is the Godfather of Rock guitar. The Jimmy Page was doing things with music in the 60’s and 70’s that were revolutionary then. Now, they are common place. My favorite all time Page contribution has got to be the rock ballad. Stairway to Heaven is the most popular one, but he had many others including Ramble On and Over the Hills and Far Away. When I talk about a rock ballad I’m talking about a song that has a soft intro and a soft verses possibly played on acoustic guitar but then busts full out into a distorted rock chorus. Obviously like I said Stairway is the best example of this.

Some people criticize Page for being a sloppy player. The solo from Heartbreaker is an example of exactly what I’m talking about. To the untrained ear yes, it just sounds like a barrage of random notes with no reason. However, in all that chaos I hear a great solo. I think that is exactly what it was supposed to be, a slew of highly overdriven notes. The truth is guitar players are generally over critical by nature. I think it is a side effect of wanting to be the best you can be. Maybe if you can play the Song Remains the Same version of the Stairway to Heaven solo without slipping up where jimmy does it makes you a better guitar player. To go a step further, maybe you are a better guitar player if you can play it AND do the exact same mistakes (on purpose) Jimmy made when he played it live. Who knows… What I want to say is I get the feeling when listening to a Zeppelin that if I were to have had the chance to hear it live it would have been just as good if not better played as on the album, mistakes and all. He is human right?

Reasons why I love Jimmy Page

He is a master of stringed instruments. He can play acoustic, electric, 12-string, mandolin, whatever, and he is amazing at them all.

His guitar solos have got rhythm. Jimmy didn’t use any of the techniques that are popular today like sweep picking, tapping, shredding, or tremolo, but his solo skills are still idolized to this day. He did an amazing job of writing a solo that complemented the song.

He wrote great acoustic songs. Although he was clearly a rock and roll man, he knew how to create a rock song with an acoustic guitar.

Top 5 Jimmy Page Songs

Everyone hates a Led Zeppelin top list because it always includes Stairway and it is usually at the top. My list is no different. However, this is only because of the amazing Stairway performance from the Song Remains the Same DVD. This is my all time favorite Jimmy Page moment so here is a video. is a crappy rip and just the solo, but I have included a link to the full song just below. It’s much better quality.

Get Guitar Pro 5 now to use these tab files.

My reasons: Over the Hills has my favorite acoustic riff at the start. White Summer is all over and uses an alternate tuning, Ten Years Gone was the first Zeppelin song I learned. The Rover has an awesome solo that really flows. Obviously there are lots to choose from, and I chose these as my personal favorites, but I’m sure everyone has their own. What are yours?

These lessons were from March 2006’s Guitar World CD and were accompanied by a tab in the magazine. I had not really heard much Lamb of God until this month when Mark Morton was on the cover of Guitar World and I decided to check them out. On first listen I wasn’t a very big fan, but I find that with a lot of music. A lot of the stuff I listen to now I was either indifferent to or hated the first time I heard it. Already I have grown a liking for the song For Your Malice, and I think thats going to be my gateway to loving Lamb of God.

For Your Malice Intro Lesson

This first video is just Mark Morton showing us how to play the intro riff to For Your Malice off of 2003’s As the Palaces Burn.

I can vouch for this tab below. It is correct. You will, have to practice the open Ds a bit to get the right rhythm though. The way that I got it was its d u d u dud u dud u dudu where down = d and up = u. If you listen to it a few times and commit the rhythm to memory and then try it it will be easier. Start out slow and build it up. Also, take note that this is played in drop-d tuning.

Lamb of God – Hourglass

This second video is Mark Morton and Will Adler showing us how to play all of Hourglass. I don’t have a tab or anything for this, so if anyone has a good one they would like to post that would be great. I havn’t tried to learn this one yet. If I ever try I’ll post mine too.

Lamb of God in the Studio

This final video that I leave you with isn’t really a lesson, but is more of just a “this is lamb of god’s sound” video. It is a 5 minute clip of them being interviewed while in the studio, and I like it. So check it out.

<eminimall products="american stratocaster, Gibson SG Standard, ibanez ts9, digitech whammy pedal, yamaha mfc10" />
We have all had our Iron Maiden phase right? I know I have… It came just slightly after my Metallica phase and just before my Zakk Wylde phase… Although, I don’t know if I can call it a Zakk Wylde phase if it never ended. Anyway… back to Adrian Smith. Maiden was always known for their harmonizing guitar licks. So lets see what Adrian uses today to bring his music to the ear.

Adrian Smith’s Guitar Rig

Adrian uses a combination of Marshall all tube heads (30th Anniversary) and digital effects to create his sound. One thing that is uncommon is for a guitarist to go both ways… thats right, I’m talking about Fender and Gibson. Adrian uses both American Fender Stratocaster’s (with Floyd Rose) and Gibson SG Standard’s. He has two of both, a main and a backup. The SG is usually tuned to drop-D and is stock. The Strat has SRV Texas Special pickups in the neck and middle pickups with a DiMarzio in the bridge and is in standard tuning. Adrian says that he prefers to use a patch cable to connect his setup to his guitar as opposed to wireless. In fact, he usese a 60-foot Peter Cornish patch cable. He says that he just prefers the sound, whether it actually makes a difference or not, he’s not sure.

From Adrian’s guitar he hooks into a Whirlwind Multi-Selector 4-channel selector which is then fed into a Dunlop DCR-1SR Rack WAH. From there he hooks in a Mike Hill B.I.S. Isolation box, a Digitech Whammy Pedal, an Ibanez TS-9 Tube Screamer, and ends on his Marshall 6100LM 100-Watt All-Tube Head. On the FX loop of the Marshall head he has a Peavy Tubefex Tube Preamp & Multi-FX Unit. The FX unit hooks into a Yamaha MFC10 Midi Foot Controller which also allows him to switch channels on the head via the head’s MIDI facility. This MIDI function is exclusive to the 30th Anniversary Head.

Finally everything is broadcast using two 300-watt Marshall 1960A angled-front 4×12 cabs sporting 75-watt Celestion G12-T75 Speakers. All in all it is a pretty impressive setup.

If you play guitar, or even if you don’t, I’m sure you’ll be able to appreciate the acoustic talent these players have.

One of my favorite acoustic albums is Friday Night in San Francisco, which is a live jam session with John McLaughlin, Paco De Lucia, and Al DiMeola. It really has some great guitar playing.

<eminimall products="ESP Ninja V, Ibanez AD-9 Analog Delay, Boss OC-2 Octave Pedal, MXR Phase 90" />
In about 2 hours time I will be heading down to the MacEwan Ballroom at the University of Calgary to see Arch Enemy with guests Chimaira. I’m pretty excited for this show, I have never seen Arch Enemy play and I think Michael Amott is a wicked guitarist. In light of this I thought I’d do a post up about Amott’s guitar setup.

Michael Amott uses some complex midi switching on his live setup. Since he does a lot of switching in his songs and he didnt want to go with a multi-effect setup, he settled on a MIDI-controlled Providence looping/switching system.

From Guitar to Amp

It’s not that simple to describe Michael’s setup in list form since he uses multiple effect loops connected to his MIDI switch, but I’ll do my best.

His guitar is an ESP Ninja V Michael Amot Signature and he hooks it into his effect rack with a Shure ULXP4 Wireless Unit. The following effects are all hooked into the loop connections on a Providence PEC-2 Routing System.

Jim Dunlop Custom Rack Wah DCR-2SR

Rocktron Hush Super C Noise Gate

Roland SDE-3000 Digital Delay

Ibanez AD-9 Analog Delay

Boss OC-2 Octave Pedal

MXR Phase 90

Ibanez TS-808 Tube Screamer Reissue

Boss TU-2 Chromatic Tuner

The output from the MIDI controller is then sent to two Krank Krankenstein heads and then out to four Krank Revolution 4×12 Straight cabs with Celestion Vintage 30s.

With this setup, Amott has a chromatic tuner and a Providence PEC-2 routing system controller with him on stage. He also has a wah pedal near his PEC-2 and one at center stage.

Michael Amott’s Guitar Setup

On his guitar Amott uses D’Addario custom set 11-15-18-32-44-59 strings tuned down two whole steps (C F Bb Eb G C). He uses a Seymour Duncan ‘59 (SH-1N) pickup in the neck and a Seymour Duncan JB (SH-4) pickup in the bridge.

Mark Morton’s stage setup is really geared towards mastering the mids. He splits his guitar signal into two channels using a Whirlwind Selector and then runs it through two Mesa/Boogie Mark IV heads. He then sets one of the heads with the mid frequencies scooped and the other with them boosted. Before each show he and his sound tech work together to balance the two heads and get the best sounding mid frequency.

Morton uses three different guitars. His main guitar is a Jackson MM1 Mark Morton Signature. His second and third are a Jackson Swee-tone Archtop and a Jackson RR5 Rhoads. Each guitar has a Seymour Duncan Invader pickup in the bridge and a Seymour Duncan Jazz in the neck. GHS Boomer 10 – 46 gauge strings are strung on the guitars and tuned in either a drop-d (D-A-D-G-B-E) or a double drop-d (D-A-D-G-B-D).

From Guitar to Amp

Jackson Custom MM1 Mark Morton Signature

Sennheiser EW100 Wireless Unit

Boss TU-2 Chromatic Tuner

Whirlwind Selector

From this point on the guitar signal is split into two channels. Each channel goes through the compressor, a noise gate, and into the Mesa/Boogie heads.

DBX 266XL Dual Compressor

2 Mesa/Boogie Mark IV Heads

Rocktron Hush Super C Two-channel Noise Gate via the FX loop of the Mesa/Boogie heads

9 Mesa Rectifier Straight-front traditional 4×12 cabs with Celestion Vintage 30’s

I think the idea for splitting the sound between two heads is really sweet. I would love to have a chance to play around with something like that one day.

When recording As I Lay Dying’s 2005 album Shadows are Security, guitarist Phil Sgrosso was introduced to the Krank Revolution Series One head by the album’s mixer Andy Sneap. Since then he wouldn’t dare use anything else for live shows. He is often told how much the live shows sound like the album, which is always great to hear.

As far as live setups go Sgrosso’s is pretty simple and straight to the point. The main focus of his setup is distortion. He has two Krank Revolution Series One 100-watt tube heads (a primary and a backup) hooked into four Mesa/Boogie Recto-Standard straight-front 4×12 cabinets. The cabs house Celestion Vintage 30s. Something that is interesting is that the two upper cabs are not even plugged in.

From Guitar to Amp

Phil Sgrosso’s setup from his guitar to his amp goes like this:

2005 Black Cherry Gibson Les Paul Standard

EMG 85 Active Pickups (both neck and bridge)

Sennheiser EW 172 G2 Wireless Receiver

Boss TU-2 Chromatic Tuner

Maxon OD808 Overdrive

Boss NS-2 Noise Suppressor

Krank Revolution One Series 100-Watt Head

2 Mesa/Boogie Recto-Standard Straight-Front 4×12 cabinets with Celestion Vintage 30s

Phil Sgrosso also has 1 backup Krank head and 2 cabs which he doesn’t use.

Guitar Strings and Tuning

On both of his guitars Sgrosso uses 11-15-20-34-44-56 gauge strings. The guitars are tuned down one whole step with an extra drop-D (from low to high: C G C F A D).
