Alexi Laiho Guitar Lessons and Instructional Videos

I have been seeing lately that a lot of people have been finding this site by searching for Alexi Laiho Guitar Lessons or Alexi Laiho Instructional Video. Since I don’t really have anything directly related to that on this site I thought I might post some videos I found on Google Video.
Alexi Laiho Interview and Instructional Video
This first is pretty sweet it’s both an interview and a practical lesson. Alexi talks about a lot of important stuff like practicing with a metronome, starting slow and building speed, how he writes a solo, and his musical influences.
At about the half way point he does do some hands on stuff on his guitar. He starts off playing it quickly and then slows it right down so you can learn it. He shows off some sweep picking licks with some tapping thrown in and then some chord phrases. At the end of the video he goes through 5 or 6 licks from some of his songs as well.
Alexi Laiho Lesson Riffs
This second is another half and half. There are two sections of Alexi Laiho and his “buddy Robert” playing some licks and two instruction bits where Alexi slows the riffs down.
At about the 4:30 mark Alexi starts to show the licks at a slower pace, however the video is a little blurry so you will have to get the general position of his hand from the video and figure out the rest by ear. At the 8:30 mark there is another demonstration section where the two seem to jam for a bit. At the 13:00 mark more of the riffs are demonstrated slowly. The video is still very blurry though so don’t expect much. I’m guessing that with the original video there is an accompanying tab or sheet music book.

In this next clip its pretty impossible for the average person to determine what Alexi is doing. It is still pretty sweet to watch though.

To finish it off here is a 4 minute video of Children of Bodom playing Downfall at the 2003 Tuska Open Air Metal Festival in Helsinki. “Ooh Hell yeah!”

Hey, this looks good. I got here while looking around for guitar instructional DVD reviews. In particular, I’m looking for something that teaches sweep picking in detail. You don’t happen to have any recommendations, do you?

I would check out John Petrucci’s Rock Dicipline DVD. He does a really good job at teaching it and gives you a bunch of exercises to practice.
The key is taking it slow. Do it slowly until you can do it mint, then gradually increase your speed. Eventually you will be able to do it like the pros.
That DVD has a lot of other technique in it as well. I would say if you were going to buy one instructional dvd on shredding, that would be it.

can some one tell me the model of the jackson the person in the second video is playing.

Anyone can correct me if I’m wrong but I believe he is playing a Jackson RR Custom. All of Alexi’s guitars were stolen in 2002 including this one. When Alexi went to get jackson to make him some new ones they told him it would take them a year. This was when he switched to ESP guitars.
I think a similar guitar might be the Jackson RR5, but Alexi had a custom paint job and used an EMG-HZ H4 instead of the Jackson pickups. Yeah, Alexi’s was obviously a custom because all of the other RR guitars have 2 pickup holes, where Alexi only has one because he only uses one.

Roope is using a Jackson Rhodes R24, I believe

Yeah. Roope is using a Custom RR1 that he had while he was a “session” musician for bodom before Alexander Kuppola left.
The RR24 is a new model of guitar that came out fairly recently, since they couldn’t get Laiho to lend his name for the model, as he signed with ESP, so it just became a nother random model number…
Probably because it’s the only rhoads model they make with 24 frets for both the USA models and the Japanese models
